How can I make my novel move slower?

I had this problem writing my first story. I felt like I jumped into it too quickly. What I did though was added more into. Like I wrote a book and when I started out I wanted it to just be about this girl dealing with drug addict parents. But I added more into it that she ended up becoming pregnant, and in love, losing her best friend and being torn between reality and dreams. I think that makes a lot better when you can just add random things to throw in there. It adds a lot more for your imagination to come up with and more plot and climax, longer story, more details, better twist; which is always a great way to bring in readers. :)
